Botanical varieties of roses found in Pakistan

There are many botanical varieties of roses found in Pakistan. These varieties are scattered in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu Kashmir and Balochistan. Below are some details of the popular varieties.

1. Rosa macrophylla: Spread naturally in Chitral, Ziarat, Naran, Kaghan and Swat. The leaves are five and pink in color.
2. Rosa laevigata (Rosa laevigata): has spread naturally in Mardan, Nowshera, Peshawar and Islamabad area. The plant is vine-shaped. The petals of the flower are white and five in number. The flower also has a mild fragrance.
3. Rosa canina (Rosa canina): It is a type found in Chitral, Swat and Ziarat and Gilgit-Baltistan. The color of the flowers can be pink or light pink. The leaves are five.
4. Rosa foetida: Found in Ziarat and Chitral. The color of the flowers is yellow and the leaves are five. Foetida is a Latin word meaning ‘bad smell’.
5. Rosa bracteata: Available in Chitral, Swat, Kalam and Parachinar. The flower petals are white and lightly fragrant.
6. Rosa webbiana: Grown in Dir, Chitral, Gilgit-Baltistan, Swat, Kalam and some areas of Balochistan. The flowers are light pink. The flowers are fragrant but unpleasant.
7. Rosa rubiginosa (Rosa rubiginosa): The leaves of the flower are five and pink. The leaves smell like apples.
8. Rosa graciliflora: The flowers are pink in color and fragrant. The length of the stalk is slightly longer.
9. Rosa ecae: Found in Ziarat and Chitral. The branches are brown and the flowers are yellow.
10. Rosa sericea (Rosa sericea): Found in the Himalayan mountain range. The leaves are four in number and white in color.
11. Rosa Kokanica: Found in Ziarat and Gilgit-Baltistan. The leaves are yellow and five in number.

13. Rosa moschata: Found naturally in Chitral, Gilgit, Swat, Tirah and Ziarat. The flowers are white and fragrant. The plant is vine-like.
14. Rosa multiflora: It is found naturally in Murree, Abbottabad, Mansehra and Balakot Mecca surroundings. The flowers are white in color.
15. Rosa nanothamnus: The flowers are white or light pink and fragrant.
